PUBLISHING GUIDES
by JOHN CARLE
Video 2-Minute Overview
The words chosen to include in the poster are based on the results of a survey completed by 20 authors.
Click on the QUESTIONS button to view a copy of the survey.
Click on the RESULTS button to view the raw data of the survey.
This survey is intended to collect information on writers who have published materials either through an established publisher or have published independently. The intended responders to this survey are those who have written classroom materials such as textbooks, graded readers, test preparation guides, or online digital books or apps. The survey should take approximately five minutes.
The information gathered here will be used for part of a presentation at the 2021 Japan Association of Language Teachers (JALT) National Conference held online.
This form is collecting email addresses so that participants can have receipts of their responses and also have the ability to edit. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, please enter a false email address.
Names (optional) and email addresses will remain private and will not be shared with any other survey participants.
Hopefully, with the aid of this survey, we will be able to help educators make more informed decisions in their future writing endeavors.
Data collection will end on October 31, 2021.

MY THOUGHTS
First of all, I'd like to thank the 20 authors who took the time to share their thoughts and experiences. Though this survey is far from definitive, it does offer a valuable glimpse into the world of publication.
For me, the most intriguing part of the survey were the comments written by the authors. It's actually a very handy resource containing advice and observations from so many sources. I'm sure there will be something of value for anyone who reads through them. The charts are also useful in that they illustrate the broad spectrum of volume of sales and revenue generated.
There are certainly pros and cons to publishing independently and publishing through an established publishing house. Below I will list just a few of the major benefits and downsides to each of the publication routes.
INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING
+ Control Over the Entire Process
+ Abundant Creative Freedom
+ High Revenue per Unit
- Logistical Headaches
- Personal Financial Risk
- Overall Quality Can Suffer
ESTABLISHED PUBLISHING
+ Professional Quality
+ Prestige, CV Boost
+ Sales Network
- Lack of Control
- Difficult to Get Into
- Falling Royalty Rate
Thank you for visiting this page. I hope we get a chance to talk during the poster session at JALT 2021. If you are interested in self-publication, please click on the HOME page and you'll see more information from other talks I have given.
